Saturday 29th October 2011, 7.30pm
Rose Street Ensemble and very special guests
St. Mary's Catholic Cathedral, York Place, Edinburgh
Conductor: James Lowe
Organ: Simon Nieminski
Flute: Matthew Studdert-Kennedy
Tenor: Joseph Doody
Leighton: Veris Gratia, Op.6 - for strings, tenor, flute, choir and timpani
Poulenc: Organ Concerto - for rogan, strings and timpani
Part: Fratre - for single percussion and strings
Mozart: Church Sonata no. 15, K 328 - for organ and strings
Beethoven: Elegischer Gesang - for choir and strings
The Rose Street Ensemble present a programme of works for string orchestra and guests, to include Poulenc's Concerto for Organ and Strings with Cathedral organist
Simon Nieminski and Kenneth Leighton's early work for tenor, flute, choir and strings Veris Gratia. Of the latter, a new performance edition has been created
especially for this performance from hand-written manuscript provided by the composer's widow, and it is fairly certain that this is a Scottish premiere of the work. The music draws on lines from Helen Waddell's Medieval Latin lyrics, each of the the selected texts reflecting some aspect of spring.
